St. Regis Improves to 2-0, K-W defeats Barrie 10-9

Sunday afternoon the St. Regis Indians defeated the Brooklin Redmen by the score of 13-8 to improve to 2-0 on the season. Sunday night on the road, the KW Kodiaks came from behind late in the third period to capture their 2009 season opener defeating the Barrie Lakeshores by the score of 10-9.

In the second game between St. Regis and Brooklin, the Indians once again took a commanding lead after 20 minutes leading 6-2 and never looked back on route to their second consecutive victory.

Leading St. Regis was Mark Steenhuis who recorded four goals. Athan Iannucci also chipped in with four points adding three goals and one assist while Jeremy Thompson registered three goals for his first hat trick of the season.

For Brooklin, Shawn Williams added two goals and three assists finishing the weekend with 12 points. He moved into a tie for 28th in All-Time Career Regular Season Goals with Bram Wilfong (484) while surpassing Jim McMahon (483). Williams also became just the second player in Brooklin Redmen history to record 700 assists as he sits second all-time behind John Fusco (799).

Rounding out the Redmen leaders was Steve Hutchins who collected two goals and two assists while Colin Baker added two goals in the loss.

In the Kodiaks victory, veterans Kasey Beirnes and Ryan Benesch led the offense. Beirnes recorded two goals and three assists while Benesch chipped in with a goal and four helpers. Jamie Rooney added two goals and two assists while Brenden Thenhaus and Dan Williams rounded out the Kodiaks leaders finishing with a goal and two assists each.

For the Lakeshores, Nate Sanderson (2G, 1A) and Matt Saban (1G, 2A) both contributed with three points each in the loss.

2008 Major Series Lacrosse MVP Mike Poulin picked up the victory in goal for the Kodiaks. The Lakeshores Mike Attwood suffered the loss.
