Peterborough Lakers Player Signings

The Peterborough Lakers continue with their player signings this week as they prepare for the 2008 MSL season by signing three more players to the roster.

Returning to the Lakers is last year?s number one draft selection, Mac Allen. Mac was a continually developing player last year for the Lakers. With more play time and growing confidence, Mac was seen as a real contributing player to the Laker defence core. In particular, Mac played very well in the MSL playoffs and then the Mann Cup. He has been a member of the Edmonton Rush this past winter in the NLL.

Kyle Sorensen has finally graduated from the junior Lakers to be a full time member of the Peterborough Lakers. Kyle has actually been quite a member of the Lakers for the past two years and has played well in both the last two Mann Cup victories. Kyle is expected to add speed, youth and toughness to the Laker defence. Kyle has played the last two seasons in the NLL with San Jose.

Speedy transition stalwart, Ryan Sharp is returning to the Lakers. Sharpie is known for his fast breaks and transition goals on behalf of the Lakers. He is a really fine developing player known for both his defensive and offensive ability. Ryan is an assistant captain with the Minnesota Swarm in the NLL.

Redmen Protect Four Local Juniors in Preparation for Major Series Draft

January 21, 2008 - The teams of Major Series Lacrosse met this past weekend to take care of some outstanding league business. As every team was represented at the meeting, it is clear that all seven teams are in good shape and will be back to compete this summer.

Teams were able to protect four affiliated graduating juniors and with a large number of Whitby Warriors and Clarington Green Gaels set to move up to the Major Series the Redmen had to make some tough choices. G.M. Wayne Colley and club President Mike Gray protected the four Warriors that they thought would have the biggest impact.

Ian Crashley the 6'5" 185 pound player is travelling west this winter each weekend as a member of the Portland Lumberjax of the National Lacrosse League. Crashley is in second season with the Lumberjax, coached by former Redmen legend Derek Keenan. He played 12 games last year and was credited with two goals and four assists.

Matt Carroll, younger brother of Mike, is in his second season with the Toronto Rock of the N.L.L. where the 6'0" 190 pounder played in six games last season. He is hoping to have a bigger impact this year with the Rock and be a regular starter.

Zac Greer, Senior with the Duke Blue Devils will graduate this year and no doubt many clubs in the NLL would love to get their hands on him, as he is a welcome addition to any roster. Last season in NCAA play with the Blue Devils he was second in team scoring with 67 goals, 27 assists for 94 points.

Steve Hutchins who led the Warriors last year in regular season scoring and toughness with 24 goals and 27 assists for 51 points. Fans will recall his dedication and brave play in the 2007 playoffs where he was still scoring hard- fought goals on a bad leg.

The Redmen will have first pick overall at the Major Series Draft set for Wednesday February 13, 2008 at Whitby's Iroquois Park Arena.

Colley, Gray and Head Coach Peter Vipond will have to wait for the Kitchener/Waterloo Kodiaks to choose the second, third and fourth pick before they get the fifth pick. That date is also circled as the scheduling meeting where the league members will gather to plan a summer of play for fans in Southern Ontario.

Fans only have just over four months to wait before the "Boys of Summer" take to the floor at Iroquois Park for training camp under the guidance of a new coaching and management team.

Kodiaks Name Dietrich as GM

The KW Kodiaks Lacrosse Club are pleased to announce the appointment of Steve "Chugger" Dietrich as the club's new General Manager. Dietrich, a veteran goaltender with 15 professional seasons behind him, helped the Kodiaks win national titles in both 2003 and 2005.

Going into his 16th season in the National Lacrosse League (NLL), Dietrich was dealt by the Buffalo Bandits to the Calgary Roughnecks in the off-season where he will take over the starting goaltending position. Arguably the best goaltender to ever play, Dietrich has been named the NLL Goalie of the Year twice, and is the only goaltender ever to be named the NLL's Most Valuable Player in 2006. In 1997, Dietrich helped lead the Rochester Nighthawks to a league championship.

Growing up and living in Kitchener, Dietrich played through both the local minor association and for the junior lacrosse Braves. Well known for his knowledge of the game, Dietrich brings a keen sense for assessing players and selecting the right talent. Dietrich's first task will be the Ontario Lacrosse Association's junior draft in January.

Kodiaks' President Al Orth explains that "Chugger brings to the team an incredible depth of knowledge and personal relationships with players and Executives throughout professional lacrosse. We are excited to have him back and know immediately that he will make the Kodiaks a better team in our quest for a Mann Cup".

Behind the bench, the Kodiaks will once again be directed by Head Coach Greg Hummel and his Assistant Coaches Butch Shantz and Brad Mulholland. The Kodiaks 2008 Major Series Lacrosse season kicks off in May.

The Kodiaks held their Annual Player Awards Banquet Saturday. The 2007 winners include:
